For the past seven years, there have been several driving forces behind my work as a media producer: inspiration from my lineage, curiosity, resilient perseverance, and a strong desire to not just tell an interesting story, but to show it.
My passion for media producing started at an early age, when I was given a small video camera to experiment with. As the years went by, l started to realize how a small device like that was capable of not only capturing important moments in time, but being a powerful storytelling tool that can connect with audiences in ways that other mediums may not.
There were numerous times in my media journey, specifically in college, where I have been given opportunities to develop, or help develop, narrative-driven content. While that was a very interesting area to explore, I found that l was more in favour of covering real-world topics through film, mostly through historic documentaries.
Malta is a country that is rich in historical heritage so there are always stories to be told, such as the Malta Heritage Trust's efforts in preserving military heritage or secret World War Il units that covertly operated in Malta. Producing documentaries covering topics like these are done in hopes that, besides more people becoming socially aware, audiences can easily connect with the historic material being presented.
Nowadays, despite my interest in holding up a camera every now and then, my specialty mostly lies in shaping stories during the post-production phase, using editing more as a storytelling language rather than a technical process.
One particular editor that has been the most inspiring thus far is Tom Cross, who struck out when I saw his rhythmic editing style on Whiplash and La La Land for the first time. It pushed me to research more about other editors, such as Sally Menke who collaborated with director Quentin Tarantino to produce some of my favourite films of all time, such as Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds, and Kill Bill.
My primary goal as I move forward in my media journey is to continue transforming fictional and non-fictional stories into experiences that audiences can resonate with on an emotional level. My curiosity for creative media remains insatiable and I am excited for the opportunities and challenges to come, as well as the upcoming technological developments that could be beneficial for the creative media industry.
